How to Download Reddit Videos with Sound Using Viddit (For Threads Discussions)

Why Reddit clips that show up on Threads usually have audio

Threads is built around discussion and a lot of the best Threads conversations start with a clip from somewhere else. Reddit is one of the bigger sources. The problem when you try to share a Reddit video on Threads: Reddit has no download button, and on top of that, the basic workarounds give you a silent file.

The fix is a tool that knows how Reddit stores video. Viddit does. It pulls the video and the separate audio stream, merges them on the server, and hands you back a single MP4 with sound. Below is the full walkthrough.

Why Reddit videos lose audio when you download them

Reddit's video CDN (v.redd.it) stores video and audio as separate URLs. The video stream is the MP4 you see in the player. The audio is a different file called DASH_AUDIO at a different address. Reddit's player loads both at playback time and syncs them on the fly.

If you right-click the video and pick Save video as, you only get the visual stream. That is why your file plays back silent and you wonder if it was a screen recording with the mic muted. A proper Reddit downloader fetches both URLs and merges them server-side. You get one playable MP4 with audio.

You can do this manually with ffmpeg if you really want to. Most people would rather not install ffmpeg, learn its syntax, find the right two URLs, and run a command. So most people use a tool.

What Viddit handles

  • Native Reddit videos (v.redd.it) with the audio merged in
  • Reddit GIF-style posts, which are also MP4s technically
  • Cross-posts from Imgur, Redgifs, Streamable, and Gfycat
  • Images from i.redd.it

What it cannot do: private subreddits, NSFW posts that require you to be logged in, or posts that have been deleted or removed by moderators.

How to download a Reddit video

Step 1: Copy the Reddit post URL

In the Reddit app, tap the share icon below the post and pick Copy link. On the web, you can either copy the URL from the address bar after clicking into the post, or right-click the post title on old.reddit.com and pick Copy link address.

Make sure the URL points to a single post, not to a subreddit feed.

Step 2: Paste it into Viddit

Open Viddit. Paste the URL into the input field. Viddit detects the source (Reddit, Imgur, Redgifs, Streamable, Gfycat) and loads the available quality options. This takes a couple of seconds.

Step 3: Pick resolution and save

Pick 1080p if it is available, otherwise 720p. The resulting MP4 has the audio merged in, plays in any video player, and works as a Threads upload directly.

Sharing Reddit clips into Threads discussions

Threads accepts MP4 uploads natively, so this part is quick. A few things that work better than a bare repost:

  • Add context in your caption. Threads users want the discussion, not just the clip. "From r/example, thoughts?" works much better than a silent upload.
  • Credit the subreddit and the original poster. It is the basic thing to do and it also helps the post land better since Threads readers tend to push back on uncredited reposts.
  • Trim if the Reddit video is longer than what Threads allows. Most clips you would want to share are already short.
  • Cross-pollination works when you frame it. A clip from r/UnethicalLifeProTips with no framing reads as content theft. The same clip with "Threads, is this actually unethical or just smart?" turns into a conversation.

Why we recommend Viddit

The audio-merge thing matters more than people realize until they have downloaded a silent Reddit video and wondered what they did wrong. Most generic download-any-video sites either skip the merge or do it badly. Viddit handles it as the default behavior, not as a setting you have to flip.

It also covers the Reddit ecosystem properly. Imgur, Redgifs, Streamable, and Gfycat are all common in Reddit posts, especially older ones, and Viddit pulls from all of them. No watermark, no daily limit, no signup. There is an Android app for people who browse Reddit on their phone and want to share posts straight into the downloader.

If you pull Reddit clips into Threads discussions even occasionally, Reddit video download with audio merged automatically is what you want, and this is the cleanest free option.

The other options and why they fall short

Right-click Save video as. Silent file. Always.

Generic multi-platform downloaders. Most of them grab Reddit's video stream and stop there. You end up doing the audio merge yourself or accepting a silent clip.

Reddit-bot accounts in comment threads. The ones that reply with a download link inside the thread. They are unreliable. They break every time Reddit updates its API or moderators ban the bot from a subreddit.

Viddit specializes in Reddit and keeps up with Reddit's format changes. That is the difference.

Troubleshooting

The download is silent. You did not use a Reddit-aware tool. Run the URL through Viddit and you will get audio.

"Post not found". The post was deleted, removed by mods, or it is in a private subreddit. Public posts only.

A cross-posted host removed the file. Some Reddit posts embed an Imgur or Streamable URL that has since been taken down. Try the original Reddit post URL instead of the embedded link.

A note on saving Threads videos

Threads has the same gap Reddit does. No download button, no offline save. We built Threadster for that. If you ever want to grab a video from Threads, our Threads video download tool works the same way Viddit does for Reddit. There is more in our main guide on saving Threads videos.

Wrapping up

Reddit videos need an audio merge. Most tools skip it. Viddit handles it as the default. Paste, pick quality, get a clean MP4 with sound. That is the whole flow.
