When you download a Threads video with Threadster, you usually get a choice between HD and SD. If you have ever wondered what that actually means, or why some videos only have one option, this post covers it.
SD stands for Standard Definition. On Threads, this is usually 360p or 480p. The video looks fine on a phone screen but a bit fuzzy on a laptop or TV. File sizes are small, often just a few megabytes for a short clip.
HD stands for High Definition. This is usually 720p or 1080p. The picture is sharper, colours look better, and it holds up well on larger screens. The tradeoff is file size. A one minute 1080p video might be 20 to 50 MB depending on the encoding.
Some videos on Threads are uploaded in even higher quality, but Threads compresses everything that hits the platform. So even if someone shot in 4K, the best you can usually download is 1080p.
The number refers to how many horizontal lines of pixels the video has.
A few reasons.
The original was shot in low resolution. If the creator filmed in 480p, you cannot pull an HD version out of it. That detail simply is not there.
Threads is still processing it. When a video is first posted, Threads sometimes takes a while to make the HD version available. If the post is very recent, you might only see SD. Try again in an hour or two.
It is an older post. Older Threads content is more likely to have only SD versions because quality standards have shifted over time.
Here is what to expect for a one minute video:
These numbers vary depending on the content. A clip with lots of motion will be larger than a static talking head at the same resolution.
Threads videos are MP4 files. When you download with Threadster, you get an MP4. This is the most widely supported video format out there. It plays on every phone, every computer, and every media player without any conversion.
GIFs on Threads are also MP4s technically. They are short looping videos that Threads displays as if they were animated GIFs. When you download one through Threadster, you get an MP4 file that loops the same way.
If a video looks blurry after downloading, check three things. First, make sure you actually selected HD and not SD. Second, check whether the original was uploaded in HD. Not every Threads video is high resolution. Third, try opening the file in a dedicated player like VLC. Some browsers do not display video at full quality even if the file is fine.
