How to Save Threads Videos on Desktop

Saving Threads videos on a computer

Most people use Threads on their phone, but every now and then you find a video while you are at your laptop. Maybe you are putting together a presentation, writing a piece, or you just prefer to download files to the device you are actually going to watch on. Threadster handles all of this in a few seconds.

The basic flow

Step 1: Get the link

Open the Threads post in your browser. Either right click on the post and copy the URL from there, or click the share icon if you are using threads.net in a browser.

You can also copy the URL directly from your browser's address bar if the post is open in its own page.

Step 2: Paste it into Threadster

Open threadster.app in a new tab. Paste the link into the text field at the top and click Download.

Step 3: Pick a quality and save

Threadster will show you the available quality options. Click the Download button next to the one you want and the file saves to your default downloads folder.

Works on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave, Opera, and basically any modern browser.

The faster way: Threadster Bookmarklet

If you save Threads videos from your computer often, the Threadster bookmarklet turns the whole flow into one click. Drag it to your bookmarks bar. When you are on a Threads post with a video, click the bookmarklet and you are taken straight to the Threadster download page with the video ready to save.

It works in every desktop browser that supports bookmarks, which is all of them.

The even faster way: replace threads.net with threadster.net

Another shortcut. When you are on a Threads post in your address bar, replace threads.net with threadster.net and hit enter. You will land on the Threadster download page for that post.

This is the fastest way to grab a video without taking your hands off the keyboard.

Where do the downloads go?

By default, your browser saves files to a Downloads folder.

  • Windows: C:\Users\<your name>\Downloads
  • Mac: ~/Downloads
  • Linux: ~/Downloads

Most browsers also show a download bar at the bottom of the screen when something finishes. You can click that to open the file directly.

What about quality?

On a laptop or desktop screen, HD makes more of a difference than it does on a phone. If you are saving a video to watch later or use in a project, go with HD. The file is bigger but it is worth it. There is more on this in our post on Threads video quality and formats.

Common questions

Can I download in bulk? Not at the moment. Threadster handles one post at a time. For batch saving, the mobile apps are slightly faster because of the share sheet flow but you still need to share one post at a time.

Can I download from private profiles? No. Threadster only works with public Threads posts. This is true on desktop and mobile.

Can I download just the audio? Threadster gives you the original video file (an MP4). If you only want the audio, you can extract it afterward using a free tool like VLC or Audacity.

What if the download fails?

The most common reason a desktop download fails is a wrong link. If you copied the URL from your browser's address bar, make sure it actually points to a specific Threads post and not to a user's profile page or the Threads home page.

Mobile shortcuts

If you also want to download from your phone, we have you covered. See the iPhone guide and the Android guide. For phones, the dedicated apps are a much smoother flow than the browser method, so if you are on mobile most of the time, give them a look.
